Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Texas: Worth It?

In hail country, Class 4 shingles come up in almost every replacement conversation. They're the highest impact rating an asphalt shingle can earn, and many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for them. Here's what the rating really means and how to decide if they make sense for your home.

What the Class 4 rating means

The rating comes from the UL 2218 test, in which steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto a shingle sample. To earn Class 4, the shingle must survive impacts from a two-inch steel ball dropped from about 20 feet twice in the same spot without cracking.

It doesn't make a roof hail-proof. Very large hail can still damage Class 4 shingles, and cosmetic marks are possible. What it does is reduce the chance that ordinary hail fractures the shingle mat.

Insurance discounts in Texas

Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs, but the size and documentation required vary by carrier. Ask your agent before you choose a shingle, and keep the manufacturer's certificate and invoice from installation.

Some policies also treat cosmetic damage on impact-resistant roofs differently, so read the roof section of your policy.

Who benefits most

Homeowners planning to stay several years in North Texas hail corridors usually get the most value: fewer claims, a possible discount, and a longer-lasting roof. If you're selling soon, a quality architectural shingle may be the more practical choice.

  • ★Homes in high-hail areas such as Fort Worth, Frisco and Northeast Tarrant
  • ★Owners planning to stay five years or more
  • ★Homes that have already had one or more hail claims

Installation matters

An impact-resistant shingle installed with poor nailing, missing starter strip or bad flashing will still fail early. Ask for the manufacturer's installation specifications to be followed, and look for an installer certified by the brand.
