Metal Roof vs Shingles in Texas: Which Is Better?

Metal roofing has become far more common on Texas homes, especially in the Hill Country and on rural properties. Asphalt shingles are still the standard in most DFW neighborhoods. Both can be the right answer; it depends on how long you plan to stay, your HOA, and what you want from the roof.

Lifespan

Standing-seam metal roofs commonly last 40 to 70 years. Architectural asphalt shingles typically last 20 to 30 years in Texas. If you plan to stay in the home for decades, metal may only need to be installed once.

Hail and wind

Metal resists wind well when properly fastened and rarely leaks from hail, though large hail can leave cosmetic dents. Shingles are more likely to suffer functional hail damage, which is why Class 4 shingles are popular here.

Heat and energy

Metal reflects more solar heat than dark shingles, particularly with lighter or reflective coatings, which can help attic temperatures in Texas summers. Good attic ventilation matters with either material.

Noise, looks and HOAs

With solid decking and underlayment, metal roofs are not noticeably louder in rain than shingles. Appearance is a matter of taste, but many DFW HOAs restrict metal on the main roof, so check your covenants first.

Which should you choose?

Choose metal if you plan to stay long-term, want the longest service life and your HOA allows it. Choose architectural or Class 4 shingles if you want the best value up front, plan to sell within a decade, or need to match neighborhood standards.

Questions, Answered

Sometimes, but we recommend removing old shingles so the decking can be inspected and repaired first.

No. Metal roofs do not increase the chance of a lightning strike, and they are non-combustible.

It can add appeal, but you may not recover the full up-front difference if you sell within a few years.
