HOA Roof Approval in DFW: What Homeowners Need to Know
October 16, 2026 · 5 min read · By the LoneRidge Roofing Team

Many Dallas–Fort Worth neighborhoods have HOAs with rules about roof color, style and material. Getting approval before work starts avoids fines, disputes and, in the worst case, having to redo a roof.
Check your covenants first
Your HOA's deed restrictions and architectural guidelines list what is allowed. Many specify approved shingle colors or a minimum shingle weight, and some restrict metal or tile on the main roof.
Texas protections for impact-resistant roofing
Texas Property Code Section 202.011 limits an HOA's ability to prohibit certain roofing materials, including shingles designed to resist wind and hail or provide heating and cooling efficiencies, as long as they look similar to the materials the HOA allows. That means Class 4 shingles in an approved color can usually be installed.
Submitting your request
Most HOAs require a form with the manufacturer, product line and color, sometimes with a sample or brochure. Your roofer can supply the product information. Approval can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
- ★Manufacturer, product line and color name
- ★Product sheet or physical sample if requested
- ★Any change to ventilation or roof lines
- ★Expected start date
After a storm
When a hailstorm damages a whole neighborhood, HOAs often see many requests at once. Submit early, and keep your insurance documentation separate from the approval process.

Questions, Answered
Generally not, if they resemble approved materials. Texas Property Code 202.011 protects impact-resistant roofing in most cases.
Usually not for like-for-like repairs, but check your guidelines. Full replacements and color changes typically require approval.
The homeowner submits it, and your roofer provides the product details.
