Can a Texas Freeze Damage Your Roof?

Texas freezes are rare but serious, as Winter Storm Uri showed in February 2021. Homes here are not built for prolonged cold, and roofs, gutters and attics can all be affected.
Ice at the eaves
When snow melts on a warm roof and refreezes at the cold eaves, ice can build up and force water under shingles. It is less common in Texas than up north, but it does happen during extended freezes, especially on poorly insulated attics.
Frozen and damaged gutters
Ice-filled gutters are heavy and can pull away from the fascia. Check that gutters are still secure and sloped correctly after a freeze.
Attic condensation and burst pipes
Cold can cause condensation on the underside of the decking, and pipes in attics can burst, which can look like a roof leak. Check the attic after a freeze for wet insulation or stains.
What to check after a freeze
Look for ceiling stains, sagging gutters, missing shingles from wind, and wet insulation. Have the roof inspected if you see signs of water.
Not Sure What Your Roof Needs?
Book an inspection and see photos of your own roof before you decide.
Questions, Answered
Sudden damage from ice and snow weight is often covered; check your policy. Damage from lack of maintenance usually is not.
No. Climbing on an icy roof is dangerous and can damage shingles. Wait for it to melt and then inspect.
